Based on a 16 June report by Ahl-Bayt News Agency (ABNA) in Iran, a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Quds Force has become the first publicly announced Iranian military to be killed in Iraq.
Ahl-Bayt News Agency reported that Alireza Moshajari was killed in Iraq while defending Karbala and Shi’ite sacred sites. It added “his coffin was wrapped in the Iranian flag and several high commanders of IRGC participated in the funeral.”
Iranian state news agency, Tasnim affiliated with IRGC Quds Force stated that Moshajari was an IRGC officer with the rank of captain and was serving in the Saberin Special Forces. He had been fighting against Bashar al-Assad’s opponents in Syria before he was dispatched to Iraq quickly after the recent lightning advances of the Iraqi Sunni forces against the Shi’ite and Iran-backed central government.
